EARWAX REMOVAL
Earwax is a naturally produced agent designed to protect our ears. In a normally functioning ear, earwax will be cleared by the body to prevent a build up that causes issues. However, when issues do occur, it is not recommended to try to remove the earwax yourself.
To minimise risk factors as much as possible, I recommend you ask about the qualifications and experience of the person performing the procedure when you book your appointment. Only seek help from a fully qualified and experienced ear health professional, or a suitably qualified registered nurse, GP or ENT consultant. These professionals will have in depth knowledge of your ear anatomy and can use various methods to remove the blockage in as safe a manner as is possible. You can see more about my experience and qualifications by clicking here.
Your ears are very delicate structures and earwax removal is, by it's very nature, an invasive procedure. Since the reduction in NHS services to remove earwax, the procedure is no longer regulated. As a result, some companies have started to train non-clinical staff to perform earwax removal. After as little as 2 days training, and with absolutely no previous ear health or hearingcare education, training or experience, these people are performing earwax removal on the public, which Ear Health Matters Ltd, and many other fully trained ear health and hearing care professionals believe, is putting the public at risk.

IMPORTANT - Please read on if you have developed a sudden hearing loss in one ear only, within the last 72 hours.
If you have developed a sudden hearing loss in one ear only you should seek advice from a hearingcare professional as soon as possible. It may just be a problem with earwax, or a middle ear issue, which can be identified via otoscopy (looking into the ear), or by performing a hearing test. However if earwax, or middle ear issues are not the cause, then you may have an inner ear problem. Getting antibiotics from your GP could delay you getting the correct treatment.
Sudden, one sided inner issues are idiopathic (i.e. it is unknown what causes them) and as well as the hearing loss you may experience dizziness or balance issues, and tinnitus. Getting the correct treatment in time, which should be as soon as possible after the issue started, and ideally within 72 hours of inception, may recover some, or all of the hearing the issue has caused you to lose. If you are unable to see a hearingcare professional within the 72 hour period after the onset of your loss, you should go to your nearest A&E department for advice and/or treatment. If you delay getting advice or treatment you risk losing some, or all of the hearing in the affected ear.
SUDDEN HEARING LOSS
HEARINGCARE SERVICES
There could be a number of reasons for you needing to take a hearing test, but which type of test should you take?
If you are unsure if you have a hearing loss then an online or hearing screening check is often the first step on a hearingcare journey. It is a quick test which can show if there is a possible hearing loss that requires further assessment. Remember this type of test only shows if a possible loss exists, it doesn't show the cause, type, or full extent of any loss indicated.
The causes of hearing loss extend well beyond earwax and age. If an online or hearing screening test indicates that you may have a hearing loss, the next step is to have a full hearing assessment. This will confirm both the extent of any loss, and the potential cause of the loss. In some cases the cause may be easily treated, such as earwax removal, some cases may need to be referred for more in depth medical attention, such as infections like those noted above, and some may only be remedied with hearing aids.
Remember, a hearing loss is a Progressive, Degenerative Disorder (PDD). The only certainty is that ignoring it will not make it go away, and could be far more detrimental in the long term to your hearing, your family and social interactions, your employment options and situations, your enjoyment of life and even your mental health. Having a full hearing assessment doesn't commit you to anything, but will give you information and advice which you can use to make choices about your future ear and hearing health care management. This could be regular testing and monitoring, general advice and aftercare on taking better care of your ears, or the fitting and maintenance of hearing solutions.
HEARING AIDS
If you are having issues with your hearing, it doesn't necessarily mean you need hearing aids. There are many more issues that can affect your ears and your hearing, other than earwax or age. Watch the videos below to find out more.
Many people either ignore or make excuses for their hearing loss due to their preconceived misconceptions about what this represents, but evidence shows that hearing aid avoidance can have other detrimental affects on your physical and mental health, your personal and professional relationships and your enjoyment of life.
Do I Need Hearing Aids?
Hearing Aid Avoidance
HEARING AID BRANDS
Ear Health Matters Limited has no links or financial ties to any hearing aid manufacturer. This means we can give you real choice and will personalise your recommendations based on your individual needs. Some hearingcare providers offer you 2 or 3 different brands, but often, both the seller and the brands they offer are owned by the same parent company. This map from The Hearing Tracker Inc shows these relationships quite clearly.
WIRELESS / BLUETOOTH ACCESSORIES
What do they do?
Wireless and bluetooth accessories are often overlooked by some hearingcare professionals. If your existing hearing aids aren't performing well in some situations, but the cost of new hearing aids is not an option currently, then the right accessory could be a fairly inexpensive way of making your current hearing aids work better for you. Used in combination with hearing aids they can make even the most challenging listening situations more manageable, opening up a world of better hearing and a happier user with improved quality of life. Studies have shown that in some circumstances wireless accessories can improve the performance of hearing aids by as much as 50%.
What are they?
There are many different types of accessory ranging from an 'App' you can use on your smartphone or tablet, a simple remote control if you have dexterity issues, all the way up to devices with multifunctional capabilities which can take your hearing aids to a whole new level. Find out more about the different types of wireless devices available, the situations they are used for and how they can help you to hear better
HEARING PROTECTION / CUSTOM NOISE PLUGS
Prevention is better than cure!
